Reading the symptoms

Hairline cracks on the surface only are cosmetic in the short term, but they let water in. Sealed early with a cold joint sealer they stay cosmetic. Left through a couple of freeze and thaw cycles they open up and start lifting the edges.

Cracks that follow the wheel tracks are a different animal. That pattern means the surface is flexing over something that has moved, which is sub-base failure. Resurfacing over it hides the pattern for a season and then the same lines come back through.

A sunken area, usually near a gate post, a drain or the road edge is a compaction problem. Something underneath was never compacted properly, or a service trench was backfilled loose. Block paving here is easy: lift, correct the base, relay. Tarmac means cutting out the failed section.

Water standing after rain is a falls problem, not a surface problem. No amount of new tarmac fixes a drive that runs the wrong way. That needs drainage correction, and often an ACO channel across the threshold.

Weeds and moss in the joints on block paving are just maintenance. Top the kiln-dried sand up and the joints tighten again.

How we do repairs

We cut back to sound material. Feathering fresh tarmac over a broken edge gives you a patch that lifts within a year, so we saw a clean vertical edge, take out everything soft underneath and rebuild the base before any surfacing goes back. Joints get a cold joint sealer so water cannot track down the seam.

On block paving we lift by hand, stack the blocks for reuse, correct or replace the bedding and sub-base, then relay to level, compact and re-joint. Done properly a lift-and-relay is invisible, and it is one of the reasons block paving is worth its slightly higher upfront cost.

Where the repair turns out to be more than half the drive, we will say plainly that you are better off putting the money into a new surface. At that point tarmac resurfacing or a new block paving drive gives you a guaranteed 15 to 25 years, rather than another few seasons of chasing failures around.

Extensions and widening

Second cars, vans and caravans are the usual reason. The work itself is straightforward, but the join between old and new decides whether it looks like an extension or looks like one drive. We match materials where we can, cut in cleanly, and take the opportunity to fix any drainage that the extra hardstanding would otherwise make worse.

If the extension means crossing a pavement, you will need a dropped kerb crossover for legal vehicle access. Mention it at the survey and we will factor it in.
